Conductor | Taras Krysa

For more than a century, audiences have been thrilled by Puccini’s haunting, poignant music and touched by the lovely Butterfly (Cio-Cio San), who gives up everything for love. The innocent Butterfly catches the eye of a caddish, young American Naval officer, B. F. Pinkerton, who makes her his temporary “wife.” When his time in Japan is over, he abandons her. Butterfly, utterly bereft, kills herself, choosing to die with honor rather than live in disgrace. The UNLV Opera Studio presents a fully staged production, with orchestra, this spring.

King David

April 30, 2011 at 7:30pm

The Reston Chorale

Vienna Presbyterian Church

David Lang | conductor

Arthur Honegger's oratorio King David recounts the great Hebrew king's life, set in 27 smaller segments collected into three major sections, interlinked with spoken narration. The conclusion, a flowing alleluia sung against a chorale, is deeply affecting. Along the way there are dances, barbaric marches, and the virtual invention of the musical style that would emerge in Hollywood biblical epics.

Brahms had begun thinking about a memorial work soon after the death of his friend, Robert Schumann. Upon the death of his mother, he began in earnest on the Requiem. In working through his personal grief, Brahms called on the theology of his Protestant upbringing to create a work of great depth and reassuring comfort. Absent are depictions of judgment and eternal damnation; rather, Brahms' interpretation is a spirit-filled work offering consolation for those left behind. The piece will be performed in a special arrangement by the composer for Chorus, Soloists and Piano Four-Hands.
